What Questions Should You Ask Your Injector Before Proceeding With Treatment?

Choosing an injector is about more than liking their work on Instagram. Before you move forward with any treatment, you should feel comfortable asking questions and understand exactly what you are getting, why it is being recommended, and what you can realistically expect.

Here are a few questions I think every patient should ask.

What Do You Recommend for Me and Why?

This is a big one. Your injector should be able to explain what they are seeing and why they think a particular treatment makes sense for your face.

You should never feel like you are being handed a menu of treatments and expected to choose for yourself.

What Product Are You Using And Can I See The Packaging?

Do not be afraid to ask what product is being used, where it is being injected, and why it was chosen for you. Different products have different purposes, and your injector should be comfortable explaining their reasoning. You can ask your injector to see the product in it's packaging to ensure you are getting the right product.

How Much Do I Actually Need?

More is not always better. Ask what amount your injector recommends and what they are trying to accomplish with that amount.

A good treatment plan should have a purpose behind it, not simply a certain number of syringes or units.

What Results Should I Expect?

Ask what you can realistically expect after treatment and when you should expect to see the final result.

Some treatments are immediate, while others take weeks or months to fully develop. Knowing this ahead of time can help you understand the process and avoid expecting an overnight transformation.

What Are the Risks?

Every aesthetic treatment comes with potential risks and side effects. Your injector should be willing to talk openly about them, including what is normal after treatment and what would be a reason to contact them.

This conversation should never feel uncomfortable or rushed.

What Does an Unhealthy Reaction Look Like?

This is something you should know before you leave your appointment.

Some swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, and firmness can be normal after treatment. But increasing or unusual pain, significant or worsening discoloration, skin that becomes white, gray, or blue, or changes in your vision are not something you should ignore.

If something feels wrong or looks unusual, contact your injector right away. Your injector should have a clear plan for managing complications and should be available to guide you.

If you experience sudden weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, severe headache, confusion, or other stroke-like symptoms, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

For Tox, difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing, significant generalized weakness, or changes in vision require immediate medical attention.

One of the best questions you can ask before treatment is: “What should I watch for, and who do I contact if something doesn't feel right?”

You should know the answer before you proceed.

What Happens If I Don't Like the Result?

This is an important question that often gets overlooked.

Ask what the plan is if you are unhappy with your result or if you experience a complication. You should know who to contact and what follow-up looks like before you proceed. Some treatments can be reversed, where others cannot, it is important to know if your treatment is reversible or not before you receive it.

Are You Comfortable Telling Me No?

This might be my favorite question.

You want an injector who is willing to tell you when a treatment is not appropriate, when you do not need more product, or when something else would be a better option.

The right injector should be looking at your face as a whole, not just trying to treat the concern you walked in with.

Ultimately, you should leave your consultation feeling informed, not pressured. You should understand the plan, the reasoning behind it, the expected results, and the risks before deciding whether treatment is right for you.

If your injector cannot answer your questions or you do not feel comfortable with the conversation, it is okay to wait. Your face is worth taking the time to find someone you trust.
